Carpet samples assist architects and designers in choosing the perfect product for their projects, but often times carpet samples are simply tossed in the dumpster once they’ve served their purpose.

Ample Sample challenges designers to “Rethink. Reuse. Upcyle.” carpet samples that have outlived their usefulness by transforming them into unique, new products.

Each year Sample Sample holds a design competition for these repurposed designs. Entries are judged on “criteria of aesthetics, purpose, ease of creation, creativity, durability, number/volume of carpet samples” used.

Designers use carpet samples to create anything from hats, art, chairs, stools, dishes, messenger bags and shoes. Here are a few of 2008’s entries:
